These are some books, that "Tad" recommended as introductory works in MusicTheory:
Practica Musica from Ars Nova software. A software and book
combination that starts from the begining.
Tonal Harmony by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne. Assumes you know a
bit about notation. A very thorough introduction to common practice
harmony, both diatonic and chromatic. An undergraduate college text.
you could also go in another direction:
Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory by Joseph Straus. You don't
necessarily need to know much about common practice to deal with 20th
century music concepts, so you could start here. Another undergrad text.
